Torres Takes Gerrard's Advice & Stays Upright. ( October 11, 2007 )
Fernando Torres has revealed that he stopped diving - because Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard told him to.
Liverpool's Spanish striker Fernando Torres says he stopped diving when skipper Steven Gerrard said he did not want cheats in his team.
Torres, the Reds' record signing, told the Daily Mail: "Here [in England], they're not going to whistle for anything if you fall over. There's no point feigning anything because referees are fooled less.
"Moreover, it's your own team-mates like Steven Gerrard who don't like you using those tricks."
Torres was appointed captain of Atletico Madrid at the tender age of 19, but says he now realises he did not discharge his responsibilities properly.
"Gerrard and Jamie Carragher are the first in everything and it's contagious," he added.
"The fact that the most iconic of players and the captain at this club are so interested in getting things right says a lot about the team.
"They're details which make me realise that I didn't do these things as captain of Atletico."
